Mcfly, Royal Albert Hall | Fan Culture

This photo was taken as part of my ongoing project about fan culture. I intend to explore crowds and queues of fans showing the dedication of fans. In this case, photographing the crowd at a live music concert conveying the atmosphere with the audience's arms in the air. Specifically, this concert was McFly at the Royal Albert Hall celebrating their 10th anniversary. The colour balance was edited in this photo and it creates really vibrant colours in the image with strong pink and blue colours. Also, the image isn't too overexposed, nor is the confetti out of focus so the aperture and shutterspeed is good.

Warner Bros Studio Tour | Fan Culture

This image was taken as part of my current project exploring fan culture, showing the passion of fans by photographing them in crowds and queues. Specifically this was taken at the Warner Bros Studio Tour in London, an exhibit of the sets used in the Harry Potter films which hundreds of fans of the films visit every day.

The composition of the photo is good and exactly shows the rule-of-thirds composition rule. Also the lighting of the photo is very good and makes the purple and blue colours very vibrant. The shutter speed is also good, despite is being blurred it creates a nice effect that could convey the rush of the crowds.

Grand Central Station | New York

This is a photograph of Grand Central Station in New York taken for my AS exam. The shutterspeed of this photo is good as it has managed to capture the movement of the people in the bottom right corner well, despite being unfocused. The composition of  the photo is very good as I've managed to capture the Chrysler building in the background. It also has good lighting despite it being taken at night - the station itself is well lit and not too dark which it easily could be because the rest of the image is dark.

Times Square | New York

This was taken during my visit to New York and was used as part of my AS exam. The photo has a good composition as you get a good overall view of Times Square. The lighting is decent but could have been better, although the blue of the sky is very vibrant. If I could improve it I would make the foreground brighter, but that would mean that the sky would be too overexposed. However, I did aim to edit my photo in the style of my contextual influence Stuart Franklin, so it is a decent edit overall.

Building | New York

For my AS exam last year, I went on a trip to New York and intended to portray the contrasts of the city. The photograph has been taken at a good 'looking up angle' and 'shows off' the height of the building located at the south of Manhattan. The photo is a little too overexposed as you can tell by the whiteness of the sky, which I tried to suffice whilst editing. Although the building itself has a good level of contrast and isn't too overexposed.

Newsagent | Urban Decay

This photograph of a decayed sign on a newsagent was taken for my Urban Decay coursework last year. My main objective of that project was to take pictures of empty streets and signs but I thought that this photo could also convey the overall sub-theme of 'Silence in the City'. I added warming tones to this photo in photoshop which I think improves the lighting compared to the original. The original photo was quite dark which may of been down to the weather but it was probably because the aperture and shutterspeed weren't low enough, which is something I would improve if I were to take this picture again.

Bridge | Porto, Portgual

The city of Porto in Portugal has a significant landmark of six differently designed bridges crossing the river - some modern and others more old. This is one of those bridges which actually has two levels, the bottom for pedestrians and the top for vehicles. The image itself was taken this summer. I like the angle that I took the photo at along with the composition being very good. Additionally the photo is pretty much perfectly exposed, as the sky isn't completely white and the details of the bridge pretty well enhanced. The editing of the image also enhances the details on the bridge and makes them look more vibrant.

Train Station | Porto, Portugal

I took this photo during a holiday to Porto in Portugal this summer at a train station. The image has a good composition and a good angle, in my opinion. The lighting is also very good, as it was taken in daylight, and it isn't too overexposed either. Although the sky is a bit too white so I could have had a smaller aperture. I also think that it's well-edited as the yellow tones in the photo are enhanced quite a bit, and it makes the photo look very aesthetically pleasing.

McFly | Manchester Apollo

This is a personal photo of mine that I took at McFly's concert this year at the Manchester Apollo. I really like the composition and the colours in this photo as the vibrance of the blue lighting is very vibrant. That said, the lighting is bright enough as well and the settings of the aperture and shutterspeed are good as well as the photo isn't too overexposed (which it easily could be) and it isn't out of focus.

Acetone Print | Urban Decay

This mixed media experiment was created for my Urban Decay coursework last year, where I portrayed 'Silence in the City' by photographing empty streets and signs. The original picture was influenced by Greogry Crewdson and his Twilight series involving photos showing almost apocalyptic situations. I interpreted this by photographing empty streets at night time without flash and setting the shutter speed to bulb.

Once I gained that image I did an acetone print of it, by putting acetone on the back of the printed picture and transferring it on to my sketchbook page. I then repeated this process with a map that I scanned and printed out, over the top of the picture.

Sellotape Print | New York

I took this photograph in Central Park for my New York project this year as part of my AS exam. When I came to edit the photograph I added warming tones to add a bit of colour to the image, hence the orange tinge to the photo. I then created a sellotape print from this, so I then could do a print of it in the darkroom so I could gain a nice silhouette of the buildings. I created the sellotape print by printing off the photo, sticking strips of sellotape on top and then using water to scrub off the back of the image.

Overlayed Map | Urban Decay

This was created for my Urban Decay AS coursework last year where I photographed empty streets. I scanned in a map of my local area and then overlayed it onto the original image of an empty street. I really like the composition of this image and the contrast is very strong but not too overpowering.

Displays | New York

Both of these images were created for my New York project. I thought it would be interesting to create these to just show portions of a photo, then arranging them in this way makes them look more interesting. Then these images could easily be printed off for display in a frame etc. The top display was part of showing the more negative contrasts of New York such as graffiti, cigarette and steam coming from the ground.

The bottom display was during a ferry trip to Staten Island, hence I used the New York skyline, the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan bridge.

Collages | New York & Urban Decay

I created these Michelle Caplan inspired collages for my AS coursework and exam. The top image was created for my exam based on New York and contrasts. The images I used were scanned maps of New York along with other little sketches and textures, and simply set them to soft light or overlay.

The bottom image was created for my coursework based on Urban Decay where I photographed empty streets and signs to represent 'Silence in the City'. The original photo I took didn't have a lot of colour to it, so changing it to black and white made it very neutral and more effective. For the collage, I used a variety of textures including handwriting, handwritten letters, paper textures and other patterns. I really like the tones, colours and textures that this image created overall and it's very aesthetically pleasing.

Experimental Printing | Masking Tape

I created these experimental prints with masking tape as part of my New York project last year for my AS exam. The theme of the project was to photograph contrasts and I decided to explore this subject matter whilst on a trip to New York. In this case, the more negative contrasts of New york in rough areas like the ghetto and whilst editing I turned the images black and white to emphasise the negative aspect even more. Then by printing on masking tape created a more monochrome effect to the image.
